Queensland Mining Industry Health and Safety Conference: Mining Legends Award

In June this year, Simtars was approached by the Organising Committee of the Queensland Mining Industry Health and Safety Conference to help design and construct a trophy befitting a mining legend. This perpetual award was commissioned to recognise outstanding contributions by individuals in the field of mine safety and health. It also recognises their commitment to their fellow workers, by sharing their extensive knowledge about mine operations and safe work practices. These dedicated individuals have helped bring about change in legislation governing mine safety to ensure every mine worker goes home safe, every day.

This year, the inaugural award was given to 2 deserving recipients: Ron McKenna and John Brady.

John and Ron have both tirelessly served the mining industry acting as mentors, coaches and trainers to assist in the development of many of the current leaders in our industry today. Both of them started as coal mineworkers and became mine managers and inspectors through self-belief and personal drive. They have campaigned tirelessly for improvements in understanding of the hazards that continue to face our industry today. They believe strongly in the practical elements in the training of future leaders, as well as the need for mine site mentoring by competent and knowledgeable personnel.

On 5 September 2017, Ron attended Simtars and presented to our team on his vast experience as well as some of the issues that are currently being faced by the industry. Ron’s presentation was both authentic and powerful. All in attendance were in awe of this mining legend.
