Building Big Rocks Weir

The Queensland Government is investing in infrastructure to deliver water security to support the growth of agriculture and jobs in North Queensland.

Big Rocks Weir will supply a potential 10,000 megalitres of additional water to expand agriculture, industry and urban water security for the region.

Location of Big Rocks Weir

The proposed weir is located on the Burdekin River, approximately 26km north-west of Charters Towers.

Pre-construction funding

The Queensland Government is providing financial support for pre-construction activities including:

• environmental impact assessment and approvals
• detailed design and construction costings
• assessment of water pricing and funding requirements
• engagement with potential customers.

Final funding for construction will be negotiated between state, federal and local government following the completion of this first stage.

Water management

Additional water made available by the Big Rocks Weir project will be managed as part of the Burdekin Basin water plan.

Project assessments

Townsville Enterprise Limited has undertaken the Hells Gate Dam feasibility study and Big Rocks Weir detailed business case.

These assessments are supported by funding from the National Water Infrastructure Development Fund (NWIDF).
