Have your say on Longreach locality proposals
29 September 2017
Members of the public and community groups are invited to have their say on a proposal to alter the locality boundary of Longreach and discontinue seven other localities.
Department of Natural Resources and Mines (DNRM) Executive Director Central Region Darren Moor said Longreach Regional Council had suggested the changes to address ongoing confusion in the community about place names.
“Feedback received by Longreach Regional Council from the local community identified widespread confusion with road names, rural addressing, localities and property names,” Mr Moor said.
“This confusion has impacted negatively on the delivery of emergency services and postal and mapping services. That is why a proposal has been developed to alter the locality boundary of Longreach and discontinue the localities of Vergemont, Tocal, Ernestina, Camoola, Chorregon, Maneroo and Morella.”
Mr Moor said the proposal had been developed following consultation in the local community.
“Longreach Regional Council sought the views of 123 landowners who would be affected if the proposed changes were implemented with 118 of those landowners supporting the proposal,” Mr Moor said.
“Council and the local landowners have expressed the view that amalgamating these localities into one locality of Longreach will substantially rectify the confusing rural addressing system. The public and community groups can now make submissions on the proposal until 1 December 2017.
“All feedback is considered by the Minister for Natural Resources and Mines before a decision is made on whether to accept, modify or reject the proposal.”
Queensland place name plan QPN1380 shows the location of the place considered under the proposal and may be viewed at the Queensland Place Names section on the Department of Natural Resources and Mines website – www.dnrm.qld.gov.au
The plan may also be viewed at the Department of Natural Resources and Mines office at 10357 Landsborough Highway, Longreach and the Longreach Regional Council office at 96A Eagle Street, Longreach.
